Understanding Match Reports
Once a match has been completed and the recording coach has marked it as ended, Touchline Insights automatically processes the in game events data into a comprehensive Match Report. This report provides a clear overview of the games outcome, detailed performance insights and a full chronological log of events
This guide will breakdown what you will find in the Match Report and what it means

Overview
Coaches will be able to see the Match Reports by going to Matches, clicking on the Match and then Match Report
The top of the report displays two seperate logos, if your administration team has setup your club logo, one of the images will be this, otherwise both logos will display the Touchline Insights logo. This section will also display the match information including the teams, data, match type and score. By clicking on the Download button you will be able to download this report into a PDF document
Touchline Insights Analysis System
The core of the Match Report is the automated analysis system which reviews the match and recorded data and generates insights across these phases of the game providing positives, improvements and training suggestions. The report will only display insight sections which have enought data to go off or has been deemed by the analysis system as analytically relevant
Touchline Insights automatically generates feedback by comparing the statistics from the match events to indicators which have been based on professional rugby standards. Please read through the Effective Utilisation of Match Reports documentation for more information on how to use this feedback
The following is a list of all of the potential insights. These will be covered in more detail throught this documentation:
- Try / Endurance Insights
- Kicking Insights
- Penalty / Discipline Insights
- Handling Insights
- Lineout Insights
- Scrum Insights
Try / Endurance Insights
This section focuses heavily on the timing of trys and game management. It is triggered by trys that are scored or converted at the beginning and end of each half. This provides infomation about a teams ability to get off the line hard and fast at the start of play, and to continue performance under fatigue and the end of it
Kicking Insights
This section evaluates the overall success of shots at posts, whether that be conversions or penalties. High overall accuracy is rewarded with lower accuracy being an indicator of further training required
Penalty / Discipline Insights
Discipline is heavily analysed by checking the total number of penalties conceded and comparing various attacking and defensive infringements. The system will make a decision on whether attacking or defending infringements were more problematic and tailor improvements accordingly
The amount of penalties the opposition commit is also considered as a data point, which is why it is important to record these events too
Handling Insights
Handling insights are generated when the amount of overall handling errors passes a certain threshold. Training suggestions are tailored against whether specific handling errors were a significant issue or whether it was handling in general that caused the most problems
Lineout Insights
Lineout performance is measured against a high success target. Falling below the threashold will cause the system to recommed specific training adjustments and routines
A team's ability to compete in lineouts successfully is also a key analytical section, which is why it is important to record opposition lineouts too
Scrum Insights
Scrum insights analyse both set-piece retention and dominance, when a team struggles to win their own feed or the data suggests the team struggled under the pressure of the scrum, suggestions are created to improve training these weaknesses
A team's ability to compete in scrums and successfully turnover the ball is also a key analytical section, which is why it is important to record opposition fed scrums too
Match Log
The Match Log, the same as on the Match Recording and Recorded Match pages, displays a chronological list of all of the recorded events from the match
